Muna Mussie
Born in Keren, Eritreia in 1978.
Lives and works in Bologna.
Muna Mussie investigates the performing arts and scenic languages to give shape to the tension that arises between different expressive poles, through gesture, vision and the spoken word. In her work, identity - double in origin and adoption - is the cornerstone of her research. A Bolognese artist of Eritrean origin, Mussie distinguishes herself on the artistic scene for a performative writing marked by an essential sharpness of gestures, a refined two-dimensionality, a millimetrically calculated dramaturgy of objects, a combination of usual/unusual gestures reduced to the bone. Her artistic practice is based on the sense-of-measure, a way of making the stage a space of externalised interiority.
Mussie begins her artistic career in 1998 as an actress/performer with Teatrino Clandestino. From 2001 to 2005, she was an active part of the research collective Open, a project that marked her desire to investigate her own ways of being on stage. Her recent productions, including the installation and performance Milite Ignoto (2015), the performances Oasi (2018), Curva (2019), Curva Cieca (2021) and PF DJ (2021), investigate ghostly apparitions and lesser history. She designed the FFMM clothing collection with Flavio Favelli (2007-2009). Mussie’s international theatre projects include Monkey See, Monkey Do (Chapter I-II, 2011-2012). Her object-based interventions include Punteggiatura (2018), a project based on the practice of sewing, and Bologna St. 173 (2021), her solo exhibition at Archive sites (Milan) on the concepts of home, citadel, fortress and freedom.
Her recent projects Oblio (2021) and Oblio/Pianto del Muro (2022) introduce her research on public art. Her work has been presented at Art Fall/PAC (Ferrara), Xing Raum and Live Arts Week (Bologna), Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo (Turin), Museo Marino Marini (Florence), Workspace (Brussels), MAMbo (Bologna), Santarcangelo Festival (Santarcangelo di Romagna), Museion (Bolzano), ERT (Bologna), Rue d’Alger Manifesta 13 (Marseille), Short Theatre (Rome), Savvy Contemporary (Berlin), Biennale Democrazia (Turin), Artefiera (Bologna), HangarBicocca (Milan), Mattatoio (Rome), Sesc (São Paulo), Kunstencentrum BUDA (Kortrijk), SZENE (Salzburg), Centrale Fies (Dro), Black History Month (Florence), Spazio Griot (Rome) and Villa Romana (Florence).
